Sloan - The Double Cross

On Sloan's newest, 'The Double Cross', many might say that these maturing Canadians' sound could use a little refreshing.    Their transition from their clumsy first release Underwhelmed toward those times where they've knocked it out of the airport have been exhilarating straight-ahead rock'n roll fun.    However, Sweden's Peter, Bjorn and John's 'Gimme Some' album might be the double-cross that Sloan are unintentionally intimating, as the Scandinavians carve a more exciting version of a similar songbook, but this pack of Canucks does their nation's ears proud with their consistent songcrafting.

Eddie C - Parts Unknown

Bubbling on a back element on the 2011 stove has been the release of one of the most intriguing albums of the year, Parts Unknown by Eddie C.    The record is the culmination of several EPs and sounds like something you might encounter down a darkened alley from an after-hours London, Stockholm or Vancouver nightclub with a mysterious blend of unbearably funky deep disco house.    Comparitively, think Dorfmeister vs. Madrid de los Austrias vs. Childproof Man vs Toro Y Moi.    Where's he from?    Banff, Alberta in honest, hardworking Canada.

Foster the People - Torches

Hailing from one of the cornerstones of pretension, Los Angeles, Foster the People released their first LP Torches with an absence of the previous accusation and instead set their phasers on fun.    The three-piece aren't reinventing the spinner hubcap, but the songs keep your attention both musically and with lyrical simplicity.    Think Friendly Fires without the PR squad, Dandy Warhols' wit, and Stephen Malkmus of Pavement's tomfoolery.

The Wombats - This Modern Glitch

Liverpool trio The Wombats finally released their latest "This Modern Glitch" after 6 months of EPs and videos alluding to this eventuality.    Consider this a respectable release of comfort food for those that enjoy this spectrum of developments in Brit-pop from The Jam, Blur, Lilys, Bloc Party and this year's Metronomy.

Mason - They Are Among Us

Dutch producers Mason recently pressed their their first full-length entitled "They Are Among Us" and it is a diverse bunch of dancefloor/living room/car interior/headphone gems.    Hinting at electronic influences absorbed during the past 3 decades of modern music, Mason congeal their knowledge into a tight little nest of 12 eggs waiting to be thrown around your living areas.    Following a trend in music videos to create powerful mini-stories to accompany singles by Hundred in the Hands, Raphael Saadiq, Moby, and DJ Bootsie, Mason's beautiful track Bodicea paints a bleak picture with a violent end.

Sixx A.M - This is Gonna Hurt

Bass guitarist Nikki Sixx continues with his post-Motley Crue trio Sixx A.M on their latest LP "This is Gonna Hurt" and a book release of the same name.    Mr. Sixx takes his comfortable position with his bass and allows the remaining pair of his trio to take lead guitar, lead vocal, and they all select some programmed drums.    Sadly, after several listens to "This is Gonna Hurt", you get the feeling that, apart from the obviously ironic title, the target market for this album would be a grade 10 American football team with their eye on the tri-county title, and then the album closes with a track that might also work well in an animated Disney film.

Beastie Boys - Hot Sauce Committee Part Two

The recently released Hot Sauce Committee Part Two LP by the Beastie Boys sees the group making one of their most rip-roaring albums that gets close to the power of Paul's Boutique.    The group seems to have a renewed zest for their art since MCA was diagnosed, and now recovering, with some sort of cancer in his throat, which delayed/cancelled the Hot Sauce Committee Part One album.    MCA was able to join his pals and Mixmaster Mike, in addition to noteworthy guests Nas and Santigold, to record this bi-polar blend of party hip-hop and unstoppably clever analogies.

Anvil- Juggernaut of Justice

If you ever saw the documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil", you'd have expressed a small sense of delight or even a "Fuken eh!" finding out that the band made a new album for 2011 called Juggernaut of Justice.    The new LP finds the aging Canadian metal band tuning their amps to Motörhead and keeping their boldly 1980s metal-band-will-save-the-world lyrics.    This is a fantastic return to form and there isn't a band more deserving of another kick at the can.

Kraak and Smaak - Electric Hustle

The Netherlands' producers/remixers Kraak and Smaak released a fresh new album entitled Electric Hustle in late April to massive euphoria and expectations.    If you're uncertain on what to expect, these boys are a mixture of Palov and Mishkin, Trio Eletrico, Dublex Inc, with Roisin Murphy, but apart from the two singles pulled from the full-length below, there is a lack of diversity and uniqueness within the LP that makes your best alternative seeking out albums by the aforementioned acts included in this sentence.

...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead
Tao of the Dead

Experimental hard-rock-punk group ...And You Will Know Us By The Trail of Dead from Austin, Texas created another masterpiece of rock n' roll theatre with Tao of the Dead earlier this year.    These young men brought themselves to attention nearly ten years ago with Source Codes and Tags, which blended the noises of The Alarm, Failure, with Fugazi.    AYWKUBTTOD's newest is engorged thick with studio wizardry and welcome hints of rock heritage from front to back.    Tao of the Dead is the antidote for the redundant hard rock/punk that exists within our ionosphere.

The Antlers - Burst Apart

New York's The Antlers theatrical Burst Apart LP released in early May, nimbly supported by the vocalist's dramatic falsetto and equally breathtaking musicianship that would cause Radiohead's Thom Yorke to make hasty notes.    Burst Apart surges on some tracks, then switches to profound introspection throughout this smoldering album.    The Antlers close the album with the 21st century slow-dance "Putting the Dog to Sleep", reminding listeners that this selection of confident songs might be spending considerable time in your home, car, or workplace.

Dredg - Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy

When you step back to consider that Dredg's new album is entitled Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy, produced and partly co-written by Dan the Automator, the band was once part of Interscope, in addition to its nutbar cover, you might expect above average results.    The first couple of tracks, "Another Tribe" and "Upon Returning", respectively, provide promise on the prediction, but Chuckles and Mr. Squeezy will leave listeners disappointed, even after repeated plays, as it's devoid of juicy hooks or clever ideas or arrangements.    Apart from a capable vocalist who appears schooled on Barry Manilow, Dredg's newest is, unfortunately, as forgettable as Duran Duran's latest, but without any sexy video.

Moby - Destroyed

While his contemporaries The Chemical Brothers and Daft Punk were respectively commissioned to produce soundtracks for Hanna and Tron: Legacy, Moby built an album entitled Destroyed while trapped in empty hotel rooms touring across our blue planet.     Moby's newest LP has all the dramatic qualities that the aforementioned electronic acts brought for their own filmic forays, although Destroyed is more tangibly and immersively bleak.    One of the highlight tracks, The Violent Bear It All Away, is a devastatingly powerful symphonic piece built atop piano.

Metronomy - The English Riviera

Upon the first few listens to Metronomy's The English Riviera album, you may have difficulty conceptualizing the blending of what sounds a bit like Steely Dan's Donald Fagen fronting a 21st century pop band emitting Tones of Town song structures, occasional reclamation of classic Money Mark keyboards, and the dual perspective storytelling of Human League.    This record doesn't scream to be understood, but Metronomy's new LP is ready for the calm found at their Riviera.

Jennifer Lopez - Love?

If it weren't enough that Ms. Lopez is a regular Hollywood staple, American Idol judge, global Gillette representative, we now find that nobody was able to talk her out of making her newest album entitled Love?    Much of Ms. Lopez's songs include a common refrain of "Na-na-na-nah" in a variety of tiresome patterns, guest-star rappers, and then it's overproduced to remove any redeeming features or quirks.    Even with some occasional sprinkling of spirited latin percussion and rhythm, it cannot save this forgettable album.    For a half-decent recipe from this musical genre, check out Brittany Spears' latest Femme Fatale LP or Yelle's tremendous Safari Disco Club.

Le Butcherettes - Sin Sin Sin

Mexico's Le Butcherettes fashion some exciting and educated punk rock with 2011's Sin Sin Sin.     Le Butcherettes smash the crap out of their instruments like Jon Spencer Blues Explosion, while the vocalist comes off like a brilliantly demented Karen O from Yeah Yeah Yeahs considering Leibniz's theories, Tolstoy, and Henry Miller.    This is a violently captivating listen.

On Love Inks' new long-player E.S.P, the Austin trio keep the arrangements extremely trim, which highlights the singers' haunting Mazzy Star-ish voice.    Many current bands in this similar category from Lightning Dust, The Raveonettes, The Kills, and Wye Oak, build more diversity in their songwriting, which should keep their sounds afloat in your mind longer than Love Inks' newest.

Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin'

During the past few years, we've witnessed hints of great soul music returning with Janelle Monae, Shawn Lee, The Heavy, Toro Y Moi, and now with this fantastically rough and sexy R&B LP Stone Rollin' from Raphael Saadiq.    California's Saadiq is exhuming the musical spirit and attitude of Muddy Waters and Sam Cooke, then making an entirely fresh and funky listen from end to end.    This is evolution.

Explosions in the Sky - Take Care, Take Care, Take Care

Explosions in the Sky create a short album of captivating vocal-free tracks on their newest 2011 release Take Care, Take Care, Take Care.    Unlike fellow instrumental rock band Mogwai, the gentlemen of Explosions have chosen to remain silent on vocals and to instead keep stirring their listeners with some majestic musical journeys within their leaderless band.    This is already the third note-worthy instrumental rock LP of the year alongside Grails' Deep Politics and the aforementioned Mogwai release Hardcore Will Never Die, But You Will.    Explosions in the Sky also have a limited run of physical CD digi-packs that unfold into a model of a house with view of a tornado.

French Horn Rebellion - The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion

French Horn Rebellion just released their new LP The Infinite Music of French Horn Rebellion, yet it's almost tangible that this entire album and the conceptually clever videos will be used as a tool to bed women who might fall for kitsch and not well-executed albums such as those by Goldfrapp, Yelle, or The Strokes.    There is one moment amongst fourteen tracks that shows some honesty, which is "Brasilia Girl", though it sounds like it may have been pulled from The Faint songbook.    The rest of the album is an absolutely pretentious exercise in following trends, the funny Andy Samberg, and not your heart.    FHR are opening for the fantastic Yelle on her spring 2011 North American tour.

Tune-Yards - WHOKILL

The new album WHOKILL by Tune-Yards pushes at every constraint modern music has built for itself.    The singer's androgynous vocals move from classic R&B to Santogold to a yelping alarm and then you realize that she's also often a dead ringer for Journey's Steve Perry.    Be prepared for accusing the group of pretentious posturing during the first couple of listens, but the fourth track Powa will bring you onside and then their unorthodox brilliance will become clear through Gangsta, Bizness and then the lullaby of Wolly Wolly Gong.

Those Dancing Days - Daydreams and Nightmares

Five ladies from just outside Stockholm, Sweden called Those Dancing Days have just perfected their pop recipe and released an album called Daydreams and Nightmares.    It trends a trajectory between the chiming guitars of The Cure, the vocal energy of No Doubt's vocalist without the peculiar warble, and a thick wedge of Goldfrapp's keyboard explosions.    The gals were on tour with The Strokes during the past couple of months.    That would've been a great gig.

Bibio - MInd Bokeh

Bibio's new album Mind Bokeh is all mixed up like pasta primavera, as he dangerously rides shotgun in the musical time machine with the sounds of Stevie Wonder and Boards of Canada.    This combination can be a challenging listen at first, but not near the nightmarish The 1000 Softcore Tourist People Club by France's Gangpol Und Mit.    There's even a moment of modern rock radio on Take Off Your Shirt, although most of Bibio's album draws easy comparisons to the modern funk of Toro Y Moi's Underneath the Pine album.    Bibio is certainly in the midst of an identity crisis, but this LP makes for some good eatin'.

Album Review I'm From Barcelona - Forever Today

On the new album Forever Today from Sweden's I'm From Barcelona, listeners may wonder why the band feels that it needs to split the paycheque 29 ways between all of their bandmates.    This is certainly not a symphony orchestra and the only other proper pop group with this quantity of musicians is Beirut, but that little troupe makes a beautifully sophisticated racket.    However, after listening to I'm From Barcelona's newest LP multiple times, the band does not leave a discernible impression, apart from raising some suspicion that one of the firing squad of vocalists might be exiled member of Canada's Barenaked Ladies, Steven Page.

Album Review Yuck (self-titled)

On Yuck's new self-titled album, we see the London band absorbing the concepts of three of the finest modern rock bands of the past 20 years: the storytelling of John Vanderslice, the guitar artistry behind Built to Spill and then toward the dissonance of early Sonic Youth.    And a naughty video for their track "Rubber" ain't gonna hurt either.
