The highlights are as follows: Austra is Canadian, one part Gary Numan, one part Siouxsie and the Banshees and three parts future. In building this dark pop opera, Austra introduce the album with the theatrical Darken Her Horse that finally climaxes at the 3 minute mark, then moves in for the dramatic second single Lose It, then the Goldfrappian fourth track is The Beat and the Pulse, and Hate Crime is a perfect choice for the crucial track 7 position. They even have a sexy and odd video for The Beat and the Pulse that is not available on Youtube, but I've included the link below. These young folks know what they're doing with the rest of the album, as well.

With the quasi-metal album cover on Mux Mool's latest release Drum EP 2, you might expect an attack of overheated guitars, a battalion of drums, and a growling, embittered vocalist. You will instead hear angular hip-hop beats like that of Jel shaken with a characteristically digital recipe and sampled formulas hearkening to the lost genius of early adopter Aphex Twin, the icy funk of Forss, and hints of classic Stevie Wonder. You may even find yourself haunted by the hypnotic refrain, "Eh-tunk-ah-punk-ah-too, eh-tunk-ah-punk-ah too. Eh-tunk-ah-punk-ah-too, eh-tunk-ah-punk-ah too," from the track Flying Dreams and notice Mux Mool's exceptional ability at blending foreign musical elements.

If you are embarking on a career in modern dance or rehearsing a juggling act that you plan to present before the hiring team at Cirque du Soleil, Gang Gang Dance's newest LP Eye Contact might be your soundtrack. Drum machine and latin funk percussion laden upon dramatic Animotion synthesizer backdrops while the band reaches for early Art of Noise, which makes for a chaotic and accidentally hilarious listen. There have been a few chuckles from the music of 2011 such as Rainbow Arabia's Boys and Diamonds, Sixx A.M's This is Gonna Hurt, and Liquid Stranger's Mechanoid Meltown, but you'd expect more from this competent group of musicians than an album you'd find in the Cirque du Soleil gift shop.
I had no idea what to expect on the newest Junior Boys' album It's All True, as their previous work had unconditionally eluded me. Vocals matching a less earnest George Michael and furnished musically with the future-funk know-how and psychedelia of Toro Y Moi and The Glimmers. And a sprinkle of rave. One important track that affirms that Junior Boys have been able to 'dig a little deeper' is on "Second Chance." The song journeys through the aural equivalent of eating mushrooms, wondering why it was taking more than forty-five minutes to kick-in, and quite suddenly you begin to sense that the carpet may be creeping up your left leg.

On The Joy Formidable's newest album The Big Roar, we find the North Wales band perfecting the swirling guitar sounds of Curve, Failure, and Catherine Wheel from 20 years earlier. The album's title is appropriate, as the tracks burst from what sounds like a compromised cage on the opening The Everchanging Spectrum of a Lie. The mix is piled high with multiple layers of guitar, vocals and copious effects to keep The Big Roar interesting, pausing only briefly later in the album on Maruyama and Llaw = Wall before sinking its claws deeper into you on the departing songs Chapter 2 and The Greatest Light is the Greatest Shade. All in all, a pleasant surprise that this formula is still fizzy after all these years.
