Album Review:Junior Boys - It's All True

I had no idea what to expect on the newest Junior Boys' album It's All True, as their previous work had unconditionally eluded me.    Vocals matching a less earnest George Michael and furnished musically with the future-funk know-how and psychedelia of Toro Y Moi and The Glimmers.    And a sprinkle of rave.    One important track that affirms that Junior Boys have been able to 'dig a little deeper' is on "Second Chance."    The song journeys through the aural equivalent of eating mushrooms, wondering why it was taking more than forty-five minutes to kick-in, and quite suddenly you begin to sense that the carpet may be creeping up your left leg.

Album Review: Eddie C - Parts Unknown

Bubbling on a back element on the 2011 stove has been the release of one of the most intriguing albums of the year, Parts Unknown by Eddie C.    The record is the culmination of several EPs and sounds like something you might encounter down a darkened alley from an after-hours London, Stockholm or Vancouver nightclub with a mysterious blend of unbearably funky deep disco house.    Comparitively, think Dorfmeister vs. Madrid de los Austrias vs. Childproof Man vs Toro Y Moi.    Where's he from?    Banff, Alberta in honest, hardworking Canada.

Album Review:Raphael Saadiq - Stone Rollin'

During the past few years, we've witnessed hints of great soul music returning with Janelle Monae, Shawn Lee, The Heavy, Toro Y Moi, and now with this fantastically rough and sexy R&B LP Stone Rollin' from Raphael Saadiq.    California's Saadiq is exhuming the musical spirit and attitude of Muddy Waters and Sam Cooke, then making an entirely fresh and funky listen from end to end.    This is evolution.

Album Review:Bibio - MInd Bokeh

Bibio's new album Mind Bokeh is all mixed up like pasta primavera, as he dangerously rides shotgun in the musical time machine with the sounds of Stevie Wonder and Boards of Canada.    This combination can be a challenging listen at first, but not near the nightmarish The 1000 Softcore Tourist People Club by France's Gangpol Und Mit.    There's even a moment of modern rock radio on Take Off Your Shirt, although most of Bibio's album draws easy comparisons to the modern funk of Toro Y Moi's Underneath the Pine album.    Bibio is certainly in the midst of an identity crisis, but this LP makes for some good eatin'.

Album Review:Beady Eye-Different Gear, Still Speeding

The music of 2011 started in such a promising fashion with fantastically fresh albums from The Get Up Kids, Jenn Grant, Toro Y Moi, The Dodos and Braids.    I suppose that I can't be surprised that another rocker headed toward retirement needs an effective retirement plan, but this album will be a failing strategy for Liam Gallagher and his old band-mates who are without, it seems, the real creative force of Oasis: Neil.    You'll immediately recognize Liam's distinctive groan, but the clever hooks?    The occasionally brilliant songcrafting?    You won't find either here.    You can't sing about The Beatles or The Rolling Stones in order to fit yourself onto the same shelf, but on Beady Eye's new LP Different Gear, Still Speeding, you'll hear many songs that the producer or record company should have considered a re-do or get another producer that will help Mr. Gallagher take some chances.    Suppose that you can't blame the ex-Oasisians for trying.    Everyone needs to consider their future, but in order for music to properly evolve and for the love of music, ignore this record.   

Album Review:Toro Y Moi's Underneath the Pine

Toro Y Moi's newest presents a fresh perspective on some familiar mellow sounds from sounds of the 70s and 80s with 21st century production.    Throughout the album, it feels like Money Mark joining Stereloab playing a Hercules and Love Affair after-party with some high level understanding of effective conceptual funk.    From the quirky disco era homage of New Beat to the 80s R&B of Still Sound, toward the keyboard repair of Go With You, and then through the slippery psychedelia of Light Black, this one moves easily and confidently through this 11 track epic.
