Album Review:
Toro Y Moi's Underneath the Pine

Toro Y Moi's newest presents a fresh perspective on some familiar mellow sounds from sounds of the 70s and 80s with 21st century production.    Throughout the album, it feels like Money Mark joining Stereloab playing a Hercules and Love Affair after-party with some high level understanding of effective conceptual funk.    From the quirky disco era homage of New Beat to the 80s R&B of Still Sound, toward the keyboard repair of Go With You, and then through the slippery psychedelia of Light Black, this one moves easily and confidently through this 11 track epic.

The Go! Team-Rolling Blackouts

The Go! Team return with the first oddball album of 2011 called Rolling Blackouts.     The first half of the album is unstoppable, but then, quite frankly, the creativity lamps begin flickering.     It starts in high gear with Tornado, then moves to quirky 60s pop of Secretary Song, and then off to an Avalanches inspired Apollo Throwdown.     After the quick tangent, we're back in the kooky 60s pop of Ready to Go Steady and then a well-placed instrumental Bust-Out Brigade prepares you for the final moment of this album's fun Buy Nothing Day.     The remaining 7 songs are completely overshadowed by the blockbuster 6 track beginning, which may have been remedied by rearranging the tracks. If you want to add your own 7 tracks to make up for the make up 13, get yourself a Pepe Deluxe song like MIschief of Cloud 6, Go for Blue, Pussy Cat Rock, and Woman in Blue.     Then slap on a few tracks by The Glimmers like Who You Gonna Call, a quick Let's Get Physical cover, and Koo Koo and you've got yourself an unofficial 13 with some truly power surging oddball funk.

Album Review:
Young Galaxy's Shapeshifting

Canada's Young Galaxy adjusted their rather bland sound toward new wave on their new album Shapeshifting released January 2011.    YG harvest The Art of Noise for The Angels are Surely Weeping.     Next keeper is the dramatic Blown Minded that sounds like something emitted from a darkened nightclub in downtown Bladerunnerville, which will probably be their next video.     Further evidence of some clever ideas is We Have Everything.     Young Galaxy then take some chances with an odd mixture of sounds in Cover Your Tracks.     Consider my aforementioned DIY 4 track EP, for maximum enjoyment of Young Galaxy's sound, as the album has some considerably incongruent lines amongst the Shapeshifting.

Recognizing Musical Evolutions

From 1979 to 1981, I began recognizing modern music.    Beginning with Walking on the Moon from The Police's Regatta de Blanc and Cars from Gary Numan's Pleasure Principle, I noticed something else beyond street hockey and firecrackers.     I already owned Kiss' Destroyer and an 8 track of their Double Platinum, but Mr. Stanley and Mr. Simmons' franchise never felt authentic to me.     And then in 1981, like an exclamation point ending an excited sentence, I heard Urgent from Foreigner's 4.     There are few sensations that exist like taking notice of musical evolution in a single track or an entire album.
