Album Review:Ladytron - Gravity the Seducer

Ladytron celebrate a decade of recorded material with their newly released album Gravity the Seducer.    On this LP, their first proper full-length since 2008's comparatively aggressive Velocifero, the quartet calmly present this sexy ode to what keeps humanity firmly affixed to the Earth and sea.    The dark synths of Gary Numan and Human League's positive spirit are plainly evident, though Ladytron move away from their more anxious tendencies they deployed on Velocifero and Witching Hour and embrace the patient simplicity of 604.    Three instrumental tracks, Ritual, Moon Palace, Aces High, break the album into a quasi-theatrical piece that makes the LP feel more assured of longevity for the ladies and gentlemen of Ladytron.    A welcome renewal.

Album Review:Metronomy - The English Riviera

Upon the first few listens to Metronomy's The English Riviera album, you may have difficulty conceptualizing the blending of what sounds a bit like Steely Dan's Donald Fagen fronting a 21st century pop band emitting Tones of Town song structures, occasional reclamation of classic Money Mark keyboards, and the dual perspective storytelling of Human League.    This record doesn't scream to be understood, but Metronomy's new LP is ready for the calm found at their Riviera.

Album Review Those Dancing Days - Daydreams and Nightmares

Five ladies from just outside Stockholm, Sweden called Those Dancing Days have just perfected their pop recipe and released an album called Daydreams and Nightmares.    It trends a trajectory between the chiming guitars of The Cure, the vocal energy of No Doubt's vocalist without the peculiar warble, and a thick wedge of Goldfrapp's keyboard explosions.    The gals were on tour with The Strokes during the past couple of months.    That would've been a great gig.

Album Review:Cold Cave-Cherish the Light Years

One of my favourite albums of 2009 was Cold Cave's Love Comes Close, which was a confident journey through modern electro-pop containing many hints of Gary Numan, Human League, and Thomas Dolby.    Unlike their former album, Cold Cave's latest LP "Cherish the Light" has a darker, more tangible urgency throughout and lacks female lead vocals, which tend to detract from the clever bits.    The solution to keep Cold Cave in your musical vernacular?    Make this album into a fantastic affordably priced EP with The Great Pan is Dead, Pacing Around the Church, Catacombs, and Villains of the Moon.
