Album Review:
Jane's Addiction - The Great Escape Artist

Rock and roll was beginning to bore me with its lack of growth until Jane's Addiction brought forth some evolutions for this hard-working style of music on their 2011 LP The Great Escape Artist.    Having enjoyed a few of Perry Farrell's creative tangents after the passing of Jane's Addiction of the 90s, including Porno for Pyros and his vocal work for Thievery Corporation, Jane's newest takes some pages from the now collapsed recipe book of Catherine Wheel, Plexi and Interpol.    On the 10 track non-deluxe album, which is the one you should consider, the album propels itself in many directions with plenty of layers of Dave Navarro's guitar work, some diverse songwriting and distinct Ferrell vocals.    I'm glad that rock is still evolving.

Album Review:
AM & Shawn Lee - Celestial Electric

The hugely prolific producer/multi-instrumentalist Shawn Lee continues his collaborative endeavours on his latest project with equally fruitful film and television songwriter AM on their LP Celestial Electric.    Shawn has released several compelling instrumental works with his Ping Pong Orchestra LPs, worked with a wide variety of funk vocalists on Sing a Song and Soul in the Hole, and cover album Hits the Hits, to name but a few of his copious directions.    Seeming to be a tribute to 1970s pop, the album succeeds with many of its tracks such as Dark Into Light, Somebody Like You, Lonely Life and even covering Jackie Blue by Ozark Mountain Daredevils.    Another good project to file under Shawn Lee's long list of accomplishments.

Album Review:
The Echocentrics - Sunshadows

The Echocentrics eclecticism is plainly evident on their 2011 release Sunshadows as two-time Grammy winning producer Adrian Quesada from Austin, Texas continues his collaborative style.    Sounding like a blend of Quantic Soul Orchestra, Troubleman, Thievery Corporation, then taking some tangential spaghetti western and R&B instrumental breathers a la Shawn Lee along its journey, the divergence elevates The Echocentrics album to a wide variety of tastes.    Add this one to the Best of 2011 list.    Available on the Ubiquity Records website.

Album Review
Thievery Corporation - Culture of Fear

About 15 years ago, Thievery Corporation began as remixers and producers on Sounds from the Thievery Hi-Fi, then Abductions & Reconstructions, and then their foundation work on Mirror Conspiracy.    Their creative peak, The Richest Man in Babylon, proved that their sound had transcended into sophisticated global funk with a social conscience.    The Cosmic Game released with their musical recipe intact, but then Radio Retaliation brought forth a political frustration to the surface and it seemed as though TC's song structures were, quite frankly, becoming a bit tiresome.    However, on their newest album Culture of Fear, it is clear that the pair are still in tune with the frightening scope of political power from the very few across our blue planet, though Rob and Eric have matured this message with some broadening of their signature "Thievery Corporation" beats into something a little more refreshing, while retaining their love of syncopating middle-eastern touches and vocal work from their regular cohorts.    With song tracks entitled Web of Deception, Tower 7, False Flag Dub, and hushed lyrics such as "Can you say I'm free?" or "Take my soul. I don't need it anymore," it delivers a clear message, but the unforced delivery is a telling sign for Rob and Eric's future as prognosticators for both funk and freedom.

Album Review Federico Aubele - Berlin 13

Argentina's Federico Aubele released his newest album "Berlin 13" one month ago on Thievery Corporation's ESL Music label.    Federico's 3rd album is a finely tuned mix of smooth Latin guitar, Spanish/English vocals that bear similarities to Yello's German vocalist then pressed through Thievery Corps' more dubby global influences.    The first time I heard it, my son had put iTunes on repeat single track mode, but it wasn't until the fourth time through Berlin that we noticed that the song couldn't possibly be over 15 minutes long.    This is a testament to how smooth the album flows, which may be a detriment to its poignancy in your music collection in the future.    The definite keepers are Berlin, No One, Bohemian Rhapsody in Blue, Efemara, and 13.
